A System, according to Merriam-Webster.com, is a regularly interacting or interdependent group of items forming a unified whole. To expand upon that broad definition, it means that everything has a purpose to serve because it is a part of a bigger picture or something more than just itself. Our bodies are systems because many various functions and organs all coincide with each other to allow our bodies to function properly and efficiently. If something goes wrong inside of our bodies, or if we put something inside of our bodies that does not belong, we have measures that tell us something is wrong and that we need to take necessary precautions to get better. The same goes with a system in producing a TV show, music video, podcast, or movie. It all depends on a group of individuals working with equipment and machines and those pieces of equipment have to talk to each other and co-operate with the people operating them. If something goes wrong, a cog in the production occurs, causing a stoppage until the problem is fixed.

According to http://www.utwente.nl, “System theory is the trans-disciplinary study of the abstract organization of phenomena, independent of their substance, type, or spatial or temporal scale of existence. It investigates both the principles common to all complex entities, and the (usually mathematical) models which can be used to describe them.” Until I had the theory explained to me in my Studio Production course, I just thought of it as natural to just go and figure out what was going on by going through the process of elimination of parts and pieces and working it out to find the issue and then using systems theory to figure out what is wrong with whats next if it happens to come to that. A Perfect example, the very first time the class went to try and do a video shoot, there was a problem with the main Television that displayed the camera’s footage on a larger screen for the director to see instead of squinting at the tiny screens on the video mixer board. The director, Technical Director, and the recorder all tried to figure out what was going on by first looking through the maze of cables behind the T.V. to see if anything was unplugged. Once that we discovered there was indeed, a cable unplugged, they then had to locate the cable and plug it back in and get the television to the correct format. Everything ran smoothly after that for the rest of the class. To put it into a better perspective how the Systems Theory can be applied and how it is successfully pulled off, Hamish Hamilton, the world renown director, produced video footage of a U2 performance and here is his perspective with his crew when the magic happens. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45GluwLCvao (Copyright Hamish Hamilton).

Systems and systems theory is one thing that even though it seemed naturally assumed to know, a better explanation of how these two correspond with anything in life helps immensely with opening new doors to possibilities for anyone. Just pay attention and make sure you are not afraid to ask for help from anyone if you need it because if you do not, you may do more harm then good if you do not know what to do about a specific problem that arises while doing anything in life. Just keep calm, try and use the systems theory to figure out the problem, ask for help to be safe and to have an extra set of eyes and hears around and get to problem solving.
